History of the Peter Shields Inn & Restaurant
A wealthy man from Pittsburgh named Peter Shields was drawn to Cape May when the city become a tourist site and premiere vacation spot during the early 20th century. As the area began to grow, Peter Shields collaborated with a group of entrepreneurs who wanted to make sure that the area’s former glory was reclaimed and not lost in the renovations and new projects. They came together in 1903 to form the Cape May Real Estate Company and Shields was appointed as the first president of the company. As the development continued to progress, Shields hired an architect from Philadelphia, Lloyd Titus to design an elegant summer cottage for his family. In the summer of 1907, Shields and his family moved into the Georgian Revival style home but the next year Shield’s 15 year old son was killed in an accident. The Cape May Real Estate Company filed for bankruptcy and Shields sadly resigned and then took his family back to Pittsburgh. The home has continued to serve as a private residence, the Tuna & Marlin Club and an exclusive club just for boat owners. The Peter Shields Inn now operates as a bed and breakfast in Cape May which has nine specially designed guest rooms which provide luxurious accommodations and fine dining for guests from around the world.
